In our Reception classes we aim to provide the very best early experiences of school life, making it a thoroughly enjoyable and exciting year for your child in a happy and safe environment. We work towards achieving the Early Learning Goals stated within the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, through the provision of high quality learning experiences and opportunities to enable your child to achieve and reach their learning and development potential. Children in our Reception classes are encouraged to become independent learners and to take some responsibility for initiating their own lines of enquiry and investigation through play.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Children build positive relationships with adults and children in our Reception classes, they become confident and independent learners through accessing the continuous provision and making their own learning choices. During our daily Key Person time every child is given the opportunity to talk about their feelings and become sensitive to the needs of others.
Communication and Language
Developing speaking and listening is key to your child fulfilling their potential. We use a range of language activities in our provision on a daily basis to support your child in learning new words and using them appropriately. Children explore the meaning of new words and learn how to speak confidently in front of a group.
We have a dedicated PE session every week so it is important for your child to have a full PE kit in school. Children enjoy participating in a wide range of activities to develop gross motor skills including dance, gymnastics and athletics. We also develop our fine motor skills with daily dough-gym and funky fingers activities to help train our muscles for writing. Children further develop their gross and fine motor skills through the use of large scale outdoor activities such as constructing with the building blocks and tyres and moving along the climbing wall; and smaller scale activities such as weaving.
Our daily timetable includes Phonics and Literacy lessons. Children learn the sounds that letters make and explore using them in fun and interactive ways, developing a love for writing and gaining independence. Once settled into school life children will also be issued with home reading books to further support their learning and to practise their reading skills with you at home. It would really help your child if you share story time together daily, including a mix of reading stories to your child and listening to your child read their school reading book to you. Please ensure you sign your child’s reading diary so we know they have read at home. Reading books will be changed twice weekly.
We love to be ‘Number Crunchers’ in Reception and enjoy learning about the relationship that numbers have with each other. Singing lots of number songs helps us learn about the value of number and we enjoy exploring how to make the same number in lots of different ways. As well as learning about numbers we explore shape, space and measuring. You could help your child at home by spotting and recognising numbers when you are out and about, finding things in the house to talk about the shape of and exploring measuring activities.
Understanding the World
A vast range of learning experiences helps the children to gain an understanding of the world in which we live. These include visits out of school and visitors into school to enhance our learning. Our outdoor area also gives children the opportunities to discover, explore and increase the children’s understanding of the world in which we live. Children become responsible for the care of our ‘Secret Garden’ including maintaining the vegetable patch and herb garden to help gain an understanding of growth and decay over time.
Expressive Arts and Design
Our creative area and workshop, role play and music sessions all aid the children’s imagination and creative development. Children explore and play with a wide range of media and materials and are encouraged to share their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role play and design and technology.
We are very much looking forward to the year ahead and working with parents and children to achieve the best possible outcomes. If you wish to discuss any aspect of your child’s learning we are generally available after school. Mornings can be a busy time settling the children into school and moving straight into our Key Person groups, but we will do our best to speak to you if it is important. If you wish to discuss a matter in more detail please let us know and we can make an appointment. It is our priority to ensure that the children enjoy learning within an environment that allows them to reach their highest potential.
